Since female police officers joined the ranks of patrol officers in the United States in the early 70's, everyone from
management to trainers to line officers have struggled to address the many gender-issues faced by police
departments in the United States and beyond.
This course examines the psychological and physiological differences between men and women and how these
affect training, equipment, communication, and leadership from both the perspective of the
FTO and the recruit officer. Dave Smith along with Sergeant Betsy Brantner Smith, lead instructor of the
Calibre Press "Street Survival for Women" seminar and a "Street Survival" seminar instructor,
will talk about issues from brain function to duty-belt set-up, pregnancy to weapon retention, and will help
you bring gender-specific science to officer safety and survival training on the street and in the classroom.
We’ll help officers, FTO’s, supervisors, trainers, and managers learn how to avoid the "victim-based mentality"
in themselves and in their employees, and provide students with practical solutions for addressing the differences
between men and women in the law enforcement profession.
